New MD Takes the Reins at BMT WBM

Philip Haines bigBMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, environmental and engineering consultancy, has announced the appointment of Dr Philip Haines as Managing Director of their Water and Environment Group.

For the last 17 years, Phil has played an integral role within BMT, building strong relationships with customers, industry and academia, as well as delivering on a wide range of consulting projects. Over the last ten years, turnover for the Water and Environment Group of BMT has grown from $8m to $20m and it now employs more than 100 staff in Australia and the UK.

Phil comments on his new appointment: “It’s a privilege to have this opportunity to take the reins of a business that really is an exciting place to work. We’ve got some of the best industry leaders amongst our ranks with strong links to leading institutions, making us an employer of choice. We will continue to focus on delivering cutting edge and high quality solutions to our valued customers.”

BMT’s extensive experience and knowledge is evident in its recent involvement with key engineering and environmental projects in Australia and abroad including: the Brisbane River Catchment flood study, one of the largest and most complex flood study ever conducted; a climate change adaptation plan in the Solomon Islands to support the relocation of a whole community that is at risk due to climate change and sea level rise; and the Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort, a billion-dollar development where BMT has provided innovative engineering solutions to help address significant water and environmental challenges. BMT is also the developer of the highly regarded TUFLOW suite of hydrodynamic software, used extensively for flood and coastal modelling worldwide.

Recognising that there are challenging times ahead, Phil says: “The downturn in the resources market in Australia has meant that the domestic engineering consultancy sector has become crowded and competitive. With that comes opportunity to grow further in alternative markets such as China, India, Indonesia and the UK. This is where we will leverage our strong partnerships with BMT sister companies already in those markets to help build local knowledge and long term relationships.”
